The island of Mauritius is located off the southeast coast of the African continent in the Indian Ocean and is 45km wide and 65km long and covers  1 865sq km of breath-taking scenery.

It is a volcanic island of turquoise lagoons and palm-fringed beaches with coral reefs surrounding most of the 330km of coastline.

Population:
The island has a population of approximately 1,3 million people.  Port Louis is the island’s bustling administrative and commercial hub. 

Culture:

The Mauritian cultural history is made up of many different cultures and religions including Creole, Hindu, Tamil, Marathi, Muslim, Chinese and European.

There is no ‘official’ religion in Mauritius.  It has temples, churches and mosques making it a microcosm of faith and spirituality.

 

Hindus, Tamils, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists and others live in harmony and respect the free practice of all religions.

Whether visitors are looking to visit temples, or are marking a meaningful celebration for their faith, Mauritius will make them feel at home.

CLIMATE

The tropical climate offers warm weather all year round. Coastal temperatures vary between 22°C in winter and 34°C in summer. Inland daytime temperatures vary from about 19°C in winter to about 26°C in summer.

 

The western and northern regions are warmer and drier than the east and the south. Summer, November to April, is characterized by hot and wet weather. Winter is from May to October and is generally warm and dry.

The best time to visit is May to December when the weather is cool, dry and sunny. Even in winter, from May to October, the daytime temperatures are balmy.

During summer, from November to April, the days are hot and humid.

language

Most Mauritians are fluent in French and English. English is the official language, but French and the local Creole dialect are widely spoken.

Most Mauritians will appreciate ‘Bonjour’. In the Hindu areas, you can press your palms together and use the greeting ‘Namaste’.

GETTING THERE

Flights are operated every week out of Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. It is a four-hour flight from South Africa.

Air Austral flies to Mauritius with a 60-minute stopover in Réunion Island. Additional flights are added in peak season and to coincide with various events held on the island.

VISAS

South African passport holders do not need a visa.

Upon arrival at the airport, visitors will receive a tourist visa that is valid for three months. To ensure a quick process at the airport, tourists must have their valid passport, return ticket, and address of where they will be staying on the island.

CURRENCY

The currency is the Mauritian Rupee. The exchange rate is approximately R1 to Rs2,50.
